Chapter Five

Skylar

I’m stretched out naked on top of the covers when Devlin comes back from the store. I hear him jogging down the hall and get super excited about him seeing me splayed out for his enjoyment.

I smile as he rounds the corner to his bedroom, but the smile slowly leaves my face at his upset look.

“What’s wrong, Dev?” I ask him as I sit up.

“I don’t know, lover. Sophie left me a voicemail and I called her while I was at the store. She needs you to call her back urgently. I brought your phone from the club.” He walks to the bed and hands me my purse with my cellphone inside it.

I quickly hit the voicemail number and listen with increasing frustration to my sister telling me that our mother had been involved in a car accident. I hit the speed dial on my phone and Sophie answers almost immediately.

“Oh thank goodness, Sky!” Sophie exclaims. “Are you alright? And did you really spend the night with Devlin?” She asks.

“What is going on, Soph?”

“Mom had a car accident last night. She’s at the hospital. Sky, are you going to come? Sylvie and I are already here and it would be nice if you came. Please?”

“Of course, little sister. Is our father there?” I ask her before we disconnect.

“No, he isn’t.” Sophie says softly.

“I’ll be there soon, Soph.”

I get off of the bed and head to my clothes from last night. I don’t really look at Devlin while I’m getting dressed, I can feel him watching me though.

“What can I do for you, Skylar?” He asks while I’m finger brushing my hair.

I think of so many things that I can say but they are all pretty ugly, thanks to my parents, so instead I say nothing and don’t even look at him while I’m getting my stuff together.

“Skylar?” Devlin steps right in my path and forces me to look at him. “Are you really going to pretend I don’t exist right now.”

I try to walk around him, but he takes my upper arms in his hands and holds me in place.

“Look at me. Skylar, look at me.” He orders.

“I have to go, Devlin.” I say in a flat voice.

“I’ll take you.”

“I don’t need you.” I say.

“The hell you don’t, Sky. Don’t get shitty with me because of family issues. Let me be there for you, for fuck sake.”

“Why?” I try to lock myself down emotionally, but he is having none of it.

“Figure it out. I will take you and that’s final.” He says before he lifts my chin and kisses me hard. “You don’t have to handle everything alone.”

I nod because I don’t trust myself not to scream and he’s right about me needing him to be there. My mother shouldn’t be driving, she’s on so many medications that it’s actually illegal for her to operate heavy machinery. And my father, where do I start with him, that he’s not even at the hospital while his wife is injured says it all.
